What is the best thing that I love about my work?In order to be a professional web marketer, you have to be a little crazy, creative, sensitive and, at the same time, you have to use logic. I am not the one who has chosen that work, it is this job that has chosen me! So, to answer the question, I love the way it makes me feel: I am just myself.
What is my idea of perfect happiness? The key to happiness is to be yourself even if society wants you to be someone else. I recently lost my beloved father and this is what he left me: be yourself, always, and you will be happy. And it is true.
What is my greatest fear? I’m afraid of not being able to help people, especially if they rely on me. I grew up convinced that as human beings, regardless of differences in race, colour and religion, we have the duty and the right to help each other.
What is the trait that I most deplore in myself? There is a downside of being too sensitive. Sometimes, I risk feeling bad even if I accidentally crush an ant, and on other occasions I become anxious without any real reason.
Which living persons in Italy do I most admire? At the moment, a person that I admire a lot is the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella. He is a person, not a character; he speaks just when he has something important to say and he is doing very well despite our difficult political context.
What is my greatest extravagance? I asked my husband what he thought about me with regard to this question, and he said: “You know, you can practically write for 2 days.” However, I have many; if I have to choose which one is the “greatest,” I would say that I usually hug trees when I go hiking. I have always thought that trees and other plants have souls.
On what occasion would I lie? Probably, it is not correct say that I lie, because I really do not like to do this. I postpone the truth in order to find the right time to say it. It can make such a difference.
What is the thing that I dislike the most in my work? I most dislike when there is a customer who in the past had a bad experience with another SEO or Web marketing agency. You pay for the mistakes of others; you have to spend a lot of time to gain the customer’s trust.
When and where was I the happiest, in my work? Right now, I’m doing exactly what I wanted to do and dreamed of doing: everything depends on me. I do not have to execute orders I disagree with; this is freedom, and it is the most important thing for the quality of work.
If I could, what would I change about myself? I trust people almost immediately and I expect them to feel the same way, even if I know that the world does not work in that way. So, I would like to be less naïve than I am.
What is my greatest achievement in work? For five years I taught web marketing and SEO topics to a bunch of women who speak 3 languages on average, and now this group of people is one of the best online customer service providers in Italy.
What is my most treasured possession? My father’s piano, which I play whenever I need to talk to him. Playing piano and sport are two things that saved my life in the past.
What is my most marked characteristic? I am short, quite “pocket-sized,” but appearances are deceptive: I am strong and tough. I am also very curious, and curiosity helped and helps me do my best.
What are my most inspirational locations in Italy? Lake Campotosto, a place in the province of L’Aquila (Abruzzo). It is the place where I go when I need to feel at one with unspoilt nature. I have been going to the same campground for many years, because from there I can see the picturesque lake and listen to the wolves howling; there are no artificial noises.
What are my favourite places to eat and drink in Italy? The Tuscany region gives you everything you need: I do not like meat, but there you can also eat very good vegetables and soups.
What books influenced my life and how? Blindness, a novel written by José Saramago. It shows clearly how indifference can cause serious damage, everywhere and always. I think “indifference” is the true evil of our society.
Who are my favorite Italian writers? Stefano Benni is a satirical writer who use novels to discuss life, fears, and anxieties in a such nice way that at the end your fragilities make you smile.
Who are my favorite Italian artists? My favorite is the sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His The Rape of Proserpina makes me cry every time I see it. It seems that Bernini leaked molten marble onto two bodies, Proserpina and Pluto.
You Only Die Once. What Italian music would I listen on my last day? Albinoni’s Adagio, composed by Remo Giazotto and based on Tomaso Albinoni’s work.
Which Italian movie would I recommend to see once in a lifetime? Life is Beautiful, directed and starring by Roberto Benigni. You smile, after a few seconds you cry, and then you smile again; that accurately reflects how life works.
What role plays art in my life and work? Art is a huge part of my life; without it I feel incomplete. I write music when I feel sad, and I spend hours in museums when my soul is hungry. I have some mobile applications dedicated to it.
Who is my greatest fan, sponsor, partner in crime? My husband. I share everything with him, we have the same tastes in terms of art, but we are quite different in some ways and balance each other.
Whom would I like to work with in the future? I really appreciate Jakob Nielsen. Maybe one day we will work together. I think that online usability is like a mission.
Which people in my profession would I love to meet in the future? The people I work with are people that I would like to meet in the future, no more, no less.
What project am I looking forward to work on in the future? I strongly believe that e-government in Italy can be the cornerstone, and citizens (not only Italian) deserve more efficient online services that can simplify their life. I think it is a right.
Where can you see me or my work? My company website: www.bemresearch.it
My personal website: www.mariachiaramarsella.it
What do the words “Passion Never Retires” mean to me? Dante Alighieri wrote “The love that moves the sun and the other stars.” I think we can certainly replace the word “love” with the word “passion.” Passion allows you to do everything and even if part of the whole does not go as it should go, you win anyway.
Which Italian creative professionals should Peter invite to tell their story? Gabriella Sannino. She is Italian originally, but she lives in San Francisco.
